What Counts as a Verified Follower on X?
A verified follower is a follower whose own account shows the checkmark.
On today’s X that almost always means the follower pays for X Premium or Premium+, or received complimentary Premium from X. It no longer means X confirmed the person’s identity. That changed in 2023, when the checkmark became part of the paid subscription.
The number matters because X treats Premium subscribers as its most valuable audience. Payouts, complimentary Premium and even which impressions count toward earnings all depend on them. The checker counts the followers X lists under the account’s Verified Followers. Whether gold (organization) and grey (government) checks count toward X’s thresholds is not documented, so treat the number as X’s list, not X’s payout calculation. Why Verified Followers Matter in 2026
Three numbers turn verified followers from a vanity metric into a threshold:
500:creator payouts
At the time of writing, X’s creator payout program asks for at least 500 verified followers, along with an active Premium subscription and 500,000 qualified Home Timeline impressions from Premium users in the last 90 days. X changes these terms from time to time, so check its current creator rules.
2,500:complimentary Premium
In April 2024, X started giving free Premium to accounts with more than 2,500 verified subscriber followers.
5,000:complimentary Premium+
The same 2024 announcement put the bar for free Premium+ at 5,000.
Beyond the thresholds, the share of verified followers is a quick read on audience quality. Paying users are harder to fake in bulk than empty accounts, so an audience with a healthy verified share is more likely to be real and active. Brands vetting creators increasingly ask for it.

The count comes straight from X’s list of the account’s verified followers. It does not show when each one followed, because X does not publish follow dates.
How to Get More Verified Followers (Without Buying Them)
Verified followers come from where Premium users spend time. The accounts that cross 500 fastest tend to:
- Reply early and well to large accounts in their niche. Premium users read and write most of the replies under big posts, and a useful reply is the fastest way in front of them.
- Post original work people want to save, such as threads, data, tools and first-hand experience, instead of reposts. X’s payout rules reward originality too.
- Stay in one topic long enough to be recognised. A focused feed converts profile visits into follows.
- Collaborate with verified creators through quote posts, Spaces and co-authored threads.
- Keep the profile complete and trustworthy: a clear name, photo, bio and pinned post. Many Premium users check profiles before following.
Why bought verified followers backfire
Services selling “verified followers” use networks of paid accounts that follow in bulk. That breaks X’s platform manipulation rules, it can cost you monetization eligibility, and the followers do not engage. X counts impressions from Premium users, not follower totals.
